Happening Now: Campus Days

Right now those who have come for Campus Days are enjoying Bible Survey Class with resident professor Mr. Jonathan Ward. After that, they will participate in Director's Chapel followed by another class, Romans with Mr. Doug Reider. They will complete their morning with a tour and an info session on the BI including an opportunity to fill out a  BI application.

It is so exciting to see so many young people interested in taking a year to study the Word of God. Please pray that these young men and women and others will consider the importance of studying God's Word for one year!

Word Studies: Electives

Class: Homiletics, Ladies Public Speaking, Greek I and II, Exodus

Week#: Each elective runs for one Semester. Homiletics and Greek have two lessons a week. Ladies Public Speaking and Exodus have one lesson a week.

Professor: Homiletics - Mr. Jonathan Ward and Mr. Doug Reider
Ladies Public Speaking - Mrs. Sue Reider
Greek I - Mr. Doug Reider
Greek II - Mr. Doug Reider
                Exodus - Mr. Richard Heppner

 Homiletics and Ladies Public Speaking

Assignments: Throughout the course, the students have written assignments as well as oral presentations.  Homiletics' students also read through Biblical Preaching by Haddon Robinson.

Homiletics - Mr. Ward and Mr. Reider seek to impress one truth into the students: Don't preach your word, preach God's Word. Along with this truth, practical skills are taught and used through assignments. The goal of the course is to familiarize the student with the task of presenting the Word of God in any setting as well as general skills in public speaking.

"I learned not only how to speak well in front of other people but it also taught me how to study the Bible."
- Nick, Drayton

"It was good practice that I will hopefully use in the church some day."
- Tim, Owen Sound

Ladies Public Speaking - Mrs. Reider takes students through a vigorous course training them in the art of public speaking. She also introduces the students to the process of handling God's Word correctly. An important lesson  the students walk away with is the importance of digging into the Word of God on their own.

"It challenged me to not just give Bible studies but plan it to be effective as well."
- Kassey, Goulais River

"I absolutely loved it. Mrs. Reider challenged us and taught us about how to be Biblical women and to keep growing."
- Meaghan, Owen Sound

 Greek I and II

Assignments: Students have translation exercises for each lesson. There is a quiz each lesson as well. Textbook used: New Testament Greek for Beginners by J. Gresham Machen and Dan G. McCartney

Mr. Reider, a student of both Greek and Hebrew, provides students with an opportunity to attain a basis in  koine Greek, the original language of the New Testament. Students walk away with the ability to study and translate a large portion of the New Testament. But greater than that, students have an understanding of the importance of studying the original languages of God's Word. God provided His Word in an amazing language that when personally studied and translated reveals much more about the truths of God's Word.

"It is amazing to be able to pick up a Greek New Testament and understand what a verse says."
- John, Mount Forest

 Exodus

Assignments: There are some small assignments, some reading and a final exam.

The Exodus elective studies the history of the Hebrew captivity in Egypt, the life of Moses, and the giving of the Law. It also covers topics such as the 10 plagues, Passover, Moses as a great leader, the Law contents, and a study of the Tabernacle.

Word Studies: Theology

Class: Theology

Week: This class spans the entire academic year.
Professor: Mr. Doug Reider

Assignments: Read assigned chapters from Basic Theology by Charles Ryrie every week. Write one Theology Essay and one Position Paper per semester.

Mr. Reider was born in Lancaster, Pennsylvania and raised in Maryland. After high school, he attended George Washington University and graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering. He later received a Master of Divinity at Capital Bible Seminary. He acted as Assistant Pastor at Fellowship Baptist Church in Upper Marlboro, Maryland. Desiring to become involved as a missionary in Eastern Europe, Mr. Reider attended Word of Life Bible Institute, graduating in 1992. He was soon accepted as a missionary to Poland. After Mr. Reider and his wife, Sue, were married, they headed to Poland three years later. Because of medical difficulties, the Reiders returned in 1999. In 2000, Mr. and Mrs. Reider, along with their two children (Sam and Daniel), moved to Owen Sound to head up the Bible Institute project. Mr. Reider is our Academic Dean and one of our professors, teaching Systematic Theology and Greek.

This course is designed to study the biblical doctrines of orthodox Christianity concerning five areas of Systematic Theology: Bibliology (the study of the Bible), Theology Proper (the study of the Godhead), Anthropology (the study of man), Hamartiology (the study of sin),Christology (the study of Christ), Soteriology, Angelology, Pneumatology, Ecclesiology, and Eschatology. The desire is to take our knowledge of Scripture and from that come to understand what we believe and, therefore, discern the difference between truth and error.

“The Bible is the greatest of all books; to study it is the noblest of all pursuits; to understand it, the highest of all goals.”
― Charles C. Ryrie

Part of the mission statement of the Word of Life Bible Institute is that each student comes to intimately know the Word of God. One cannot go through life believing something without foundation to what he believes. Theology class provides each student with that foundation. Mr. Reider teaches through the basics of Systematic Theology, scratching the surface of the major doctrines. Later on in the year, several guest lecturers come on campus to teach Eschatology, Ecclesiology and Pneumatology which allows Mr. Reider to teach through the book of Romans in the spring semester. Theology class helps students not only understand the Bible but able to apply doctrine to practice. This class also helps students come to an understanding regarding why they believe rather than just what they believe. Here's what the students had to say:

"Mr. Reider's enthusiasm makes class fun and engaging!"
- Nick, Arthur

"Theology class with Mr Reider definitely sparked my interest in theology. Before coming to the BI, I never knew much of what theology was or why we study it, but going through it I learned many things My favourite areas to study were Angelology,  Hamartiology and Eschatology, I can now recognize many different beliefs and am now able to clarify what I believe and why I believe what I believe."

- Jaramie (Alumni), Muskoka

"Going through theology with Mr. Reider has given me the opportunity to see all the view points on major issues facing the Christian in the world today. Furthermore, I now have clearer and deeper understanding of the Bible and better knowledge of Christ."
- Lucas, Wyoming

The Red Carpet Event 2011!!

Spring has been in the air here at WOLBI and the Red Carpet event of the season saw everyone dressed to the max (except Kevin haha) in suits and ball gowns!  The evening began with the guys waiting outside the girls' dorm in their suits ready to escort the girls to the event, and then Hollywood style pictures were taken with a star backdrop as you entered the banquet.  It was great food and awesome fellowship with a sweet song from some of the students dedicated to Mr. Doug Reider.  What an awesome performance!  Awards were given out to everyone at the end of the evening on their stunning personality traits (they all had a star with their name on it from the photo backdrop).  We all enjoyed an evening of delicious food, great fellowship, and awesome entertainment!  There is nothing like a WOLBI banquet!

Learning the Word: Daniel a book of prophecy

From WOLBRANOS

Mr. Doug Reider was born in Pennsylvania and grew up in the Washington, DC, area. He received a BS in Electrical Engineering from George Washington University and his Master of Divinity from Capital Bible Seminary. He also served as Assistant Pastor at Fellowship Baptist Church in Upper Marlboro, Maryland. Desiring to be a missionary in Eastern Europe, Mr. Reider attended Word of Life Bible Institute’s 2nd year and was accepted as a missionary to Poland. While raising support, he met another missionary heading to Poland and they were married in 1993. Because of medical difficulties, Mr. and Mrs. Reider moved to Owen Sound to head up the Bible Institute project in 2000.
It is sweet to have one of our very own resident professors (Mr. Reider also teaches Systematic Theology -throughout the Academic year-, Homiletics, & Greek) teaching us the book of Daniel.  It is a book full of prophesies and is awesome to see God fulfill His promises and to know that He will continue to keep all of His promises.  It was great to learn so much about this significant and controversial book!

"Teaching the Book of Daniel has been amazingly fun for me. It’s odd how things I already know can sometimes strike me in a wholly new way. For example, reading Daniel 9 really hit home. In 9:2, Daniel describes how he is reading the prophet Jeremiah. Apparently, he is reading Jeremiah 29:10-14, where it is written…

“For thus saith the LORD, That after seventy years be accomplished at Babylon I will visit you, and perform my good word toward you, in causing you to return to this place. 11 For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, saith the LORD, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you an expected end. 12 Then shall ye call upon me, and ye shall go and pray unto me, and I will hearken unto you. 13 And ye shall seek me, and find me, when ye shall search for me with all your heart. 14 And I will be found of you, saith the LORD: and I will turn away your captivity, and I will gather you from all the nations, and from all the places whither I have driven you, saith the LORD; and I will bring you again into the place whence I caused you to be carried away captive.”

Daniel then immediately prays, confessing Israel’s and his own sins. What struck me is how often I fail to do the same. I read Scripture but fail to immediately turn to the Lord and discuss with Him how it applies to me. I expect the Lord to communicate to me through His Word, but my prayer often fails to reflect that. My prayer can be disconnected from what His word is teaching. Let’s put the two together. Read God’s word, rehearsing what we see needs to change by bringing it up immediately in prayer with Him. Without a two way conversation—no wonder our prayer life can sometimes feel very “dead”."

"Daniel is such a great example of how we are supposed to act and stand up for God in an ungodly world."
